Dubbed the Copenhagen user experience, the following video is supposed to be a concept for a future generation of Windows – namely Windows 8. I was a bit surprised to see many Windows 7 concepts included so I contacted the creator, who confirmed that some concepts were adapted straight from Windows 7. The concept seems to be one year in the making.
Copenhagen shatters the composite prototypical event patterns people have developed for their OS, Windows.
Copenhagen is a User Experience concept that I designed. It is unique in the fact that it manages to bring together classic design, contemporary design, usability, and art.
There are also some similar Bumptop characteristics in the video. The scraps idea really caught my interest but the portable start menu and taskbar seemed too prone to accidental clicking.
Looks decent on video but will it work in practice? Let us know in the comments.

Awsome UI! I Love It! I Cant Wait For The Testing To Begin. Bring On Windows 8! That is deff the coolest concept video.
Can’t wait to be a beta tester of that but I’ll be in college, likely graduate school by then. But that concept video is sweet.
Honestly I thought this blog was a late April fools’ joke or something but then I realized Al was being serious
.
Hey guys. This isn’t a real concept video, it was user designed! Please read the article and title carefully. Sorry to everyone I’ve accidentally tricked
Oh it was the title of the site that was tricky…not the article xD.
I’ve changed it to user-designed now =) Sorry Geo!
A computer in every home running Microsoft software? Congratulations. You have successfully completed the global control wizard!
Wrong…. There are many idiots who run mac and Linux operating systems.
Also, Windows 7 has only just come out in Japan. Why don’t we get used to windows 7 before thinking of windows 8.
Oh, dear, then you must be a moron using Windows.
Sorry, but Windows is dead. By 2012 distros like Ubuntu will be taken seriously by the mainstream and once that happens M$ will slide away.
I hope Windows make a very impresive OS once and for all, because I really like this OS, and I will be so sad if it dies.
Love to agree with you jay, but linux’s dependency on terminal will have to end for mainstream use
Windows’ dependency on the Command Prompt will have to end for mainstream use.
Linux is as dependent on the Terminal as Windows is on the CMD Prompt. It’s still successful.
In fact, I’m using Kubuntu (Linux) as I type this.
[...] It’s a concept, it might even be a hoax, but it’s fun to look at new things, so here goes. (I got it from HERE) [...]
If that video which stops every few seconds is any indication OH I can’t wait, YEAH .. See you 2020..
hey idiot, it doesn’t stop every few seconds. get off of windows 95 and get a life
anyway to tryt his on my pc???????????
I love it but O dont think it would work for people who dont have a clue how to use computers. If they did do that (I know its not a M$ Concept) Then they should have an option to switch to that new UI from the UI thats in windows 7.
That way after a while when people get the confidence to use the new UI they can switch to it.
But I dont think they should go all radical with the ui and make it too hard for people who dont know how to use computers. Make it as simple as possible.
truely said as it does look a bit complicated to navigate with … dunno….
Thats the way it will work with winfs but i can have wrong
Can We Get This UI Somewhere For Testing???
Looks like a combo of win 7 and Mac OS 10.6 (Snow leopard)… sorta. It looks pretty good though. It even has that slightly unfinished look that I occasionally notice in vista and win 7.
waiting for this window 8
http://www.suresolution4u.com
Windows 8 will DEFINITELY not be on a freeware/shareware site.
Windows may be user-friendly, but it one of the most complex OS’s out there. I doubt ANY version of Windows would be freeware. Whether it’d be 1, 95, Me, or 8.
I must admit when I first saw this User Concept I was amazed, simply as it’s so innovative. Now Obviously in designing an OS you have to compensate for users of all experience, so it may at first be a tad complicated for the newbies, but that’s not what it’s about; it’s a concept of a possible UI that I think looks, and seems to operate incredibly well. It demonstrates flexibility, a clean look to it with no pointless bars running accross an entire screen edge. It also shows what we could expect of whatever we get instead of WinFS (as I think we can all agree now that WinFS is long dead and just won’t happen). When MS do actually realise that they’re FS is now 10 years behind Open Source then maybe they’ll bother, but they’re in it for the money; and they get most of that from the noobs buying a Dell for their 8-year-old daughter so she can talk to her friends on facebook.
It’s a shame but unfortunately MS are there to make money, not to make decent and user-inspired software solutions. With enough nagging and feedback through beta testing and such we might see them make some headway, but I doubt it; so far the largest changes we’ve actually seen are transparent effects of Aero (which is there to dazzle the noobs). What else has either Vista or 7 Really given us that is terribly useful or intuitive? I’m not knocking them entirely; I do enjoy the experience of using Vista (I know I’m the only one there
) and 7, but it does feel to me that MS are focussing on the PC-Illiterate too much and ignoring those of us who already know how to use Windows. So 7 has shown some decent functional improvements in the way of Jump Lists, and I am in favour of the new Taskbar. I also like the Libraries. Perhaps I am a little hard on MS from time to time, but they do seem to be ignoring the majority of their users to focus on grabbing the new ones.
What has Windows 7 given power users? PowerShell.
come on microsoft, cant make something simple and easy to use. always trying to add as many features as possible and make things more sofisticated.
i like windows7 but i dont think it is easy enough for a new PC user to understand it.
no, im not an apple fan but i am waiting to see what Google has to offer.
Keyword is “User Designed” so this isn’t what Microsoft is thinking, this is what a lone user thinks.
Windows 7 hard to understand? Hmm…I find that hard to believe.
lets start with microsofts latest OS, Windows7.
what do those icons on the bottom of the screen do? well,
1.if that app isnt already open it will open it. (bit like quicklaunch)
2.if that app is open, then it works just like XP. (Maximise or Min)
3.if you have 2 or more of the same app open then when you click on the icon two thumbnails come up, then you have to hover over each one to see if thats the one you want and then click on it. sorry but its a lot quicker in ‘XP’.
btw, ive been working with computers for over 10 years now, i repair computers both software and hadware.
I think microsoft has done an excellent job in win7 but i think they ‘could’ go a whole lot further. its still the same old start button and taskbar, im waiting to see something closer to “Microsoft Surface”.
#3 isn’t exactly the way you explained it. Once you click the icon, you’ll see all the windows and their titles. Unless you name all your documents “Doc1, Doc2, Doc3, etc.”, you’d easily figure out which window you want. Yeah on XP you don’t even the the window preview. I’m sorry but I might just have to click through each one because I don’t know which one is the correct window because I can’t even get a preview of it. If you simply use the window titles on windows XP, then simply continue to use the window titles in 7 and just click the window without doing all that hovering stuff.
And same old taskbar? Not really. Does the old taskbar have jumplists? I doubt it. Does the old taskbar have a nifty show desktop button that you can hover over? Does the old taskbar get rid of that cluttered system tray? I fail to see how it’s the same old taskbar when there are more powerful features in the taskbar.
Sure windows previews are nice and useful, that idea been around for sometime, don’t know its exact origin but I’ve had it on my ‘08 ubuntu. But really, with expose, I almost never, ever would need windows previews, and they would just be a stone in the way most of the time.
theres a small feature on ubuntu expose as opposite to osx expose, don’t know if its the same but, in ubuntu you could zoom-in and out a window with a middle mouse click..thats a great help in loads of windows..
basically regarding multitasking, the options for that that compiz fusion offers is incredibly great and actually useful, really useful.
it’s a windows 8 in the future?
WOW. Perfect & wonderful!
fack. look like longhorn in windows 7.
Well of course it’s not real. It’s a “user-designed” concept video, not a “Microsoft-designed” concept video.
bester and perfect,worderful
[...] Looks decent on video but will it work in practice? Let us know in the comments. [...]
Some of graphics in this preview looking too much dull and old style, Like Titlebar and some icons. Taskbar’s Start menu is also very much dull.
Hope Microsoft will do better then preview.
but rest of this video is amazing. 4/5
Windows 7.. what’s more?
Wow, amazing and beautiful. It is a shame its a user-designed concept, because I would LOVE Microsoft to do something like this.
really? thats just too much crap to deal with for me. its really a load of mess. and it looks like some evil combination of apples search and other bits with a vista crappiness. windows 7 is extremely nice and not really over the top like vista was trying to be, i say this, because vista had a lot of shiny crap that didnt really work, where as windows 7 absolutely is an amazing step for microsoft. it simply works without being too obnixous as vista was. i really hope this doesnt go into the next operating system. i know everything is about improving speed with a better workflow, but thats just too much too mess with. i could go on about how annoying that ui would get but i highly doubt anyone would read it. anyways someone just going to whine about how im a moron and just stupid all i have to say to the is good luck with you hellish ui.
lol ?!
browsing folders will take massive amount of time to search for something!!!
and lol at micro START…
no need for me…
Just looks like a scruffier version of what Ubuntu is doing already, some of the ideas were clearly taken straight from Linux and OS X…why wait till 2012 when you can have an OS that looks and works like that now!?
And think where Apple and Linux will be by 2012…alot further ahead!…
Spot on my man!
Agreed, 100%
U can give the example only of MAC but not Linux, because it is far away from from Microsoft, from both perspective creativity (GUI)and performance.
Almost my thought exactly when I saw the video!
Creative? No.
Useful? Yes.
Really useful? Not really.
mash up of different actions in both Compiz Fusion and OSX
but going full time on ubuntu just for the awesome and arguably best and most customizable GUI without sacraficing loads of resources like on Windows…Not for me..
I loved ubuntu when I used it, and I would be using it right now if only adobe gave them better support..
and ubuntu drivers are incredibly ease of mind if you have a common hardware, but shows its ugly face when its not, regardless of what you think is common as opposite to what ubuntu think is common. And other things such as installing applications and removing them, its really quite easy, for the most part, and the Terminal becomes like a dark strict notepad that can be as powerful as the whole computer lol
okay enough talk..
Well I think MS underestimated how much consumers really care about appearance. After all, they’ve been blind to what matters for long since they’ve been such a monopoly for so long but now it’s shrinking.
And as an OS that had a large proportion of the market automatically accepting it due to work, it assumed that Vista would be the winning OS with many of its internal upgrades versas external (appearances and GUI and such).
To be honest, Vista was a good OS given that you had the proper hardware. It was sluggish at times but which OS isn’t? After SP1, Vista was twice as good.
Anyway, the computer is about the web now. Each sequential OS upgrade will matter less and less. I think MS has learned their lesson and the next generation in OS will be more about what kind of user you are rather than which OS is better.
thank thank thank thank
That’s the best OS GUI that i have ever seen
Fail: I don’t think they’ll use Utorrent on there desktop….
It looks a lot like OS X, you know, the OS that is about 5 years ahead of Windows… Also, it’s messy: features here, features there, talk about making it simple to understand… What about what really counts: what’s under the hood? Do you have some good copied ideas for that as well? Maybe using the Ubuntu kernel, he?

This looks like it would be sick GUI. It’s kinda cool they took the concept of compiz-fusion for the user thing with the 3d desktop. I also found that the bottom of the screen seemed a lot less crammed, i liked the idea of having the task bar split up into three different sections instead of one long task bar at the bottom. I also like the layout they used for explorer.
copy of (mac os leo + ubuntu) =windows 8
This is pretty awesome this guy has got a great imagination. I have never really liked the default windows look Windows 7’s UI is pretty cool. (I’m using the RC right now) But it lacks a little pizzaz this concept certainly deliver that while maintaining to an extent the familiar interface. Microsoft has got a long way to go before they catch up with MAC OS X releases in price as well as the 3D interface which Apple/Mac has patented!
Personally, I don’t like most of it.
The only bits I think are decent is the logon/logoff features.
I’d miss having a taskbar and what the hell is up with the horrible little corner things? Too prone to accidental clicking and if i’m honest, I think they look a bit basic.
If thats what Microsoft has to offer after 7, I think it’s safe to say that they have lost their monopoly in the OS market.
It’s nothing new (it is for Windows). As previously mentioned, it’s obviously a mash-up of Mac and Linux. Rather than wait until 2012 you could just install a Linux OS and customize it to look and function just like that.
I guess you saw how Windows 7 stole concepts from Mac and Linux so you thought, why not go all out? But putting that aside, it is a decent concept for Windows 8… and I do like Windows 7, it’s a huge step for Microsoft. Only problem is that it does have some driver problems which I’ve never encountered with Ubuntu. :/
It looks good but it seems not they’re completely copying the dock and trying a little too hard to be distinct with all of the advanced menus and searches… ehh idk but i know that w7 is awesome!
This is the creativity.. I really like that.
Microsoft must consider it b4 going for Windows code name 8!
Looks that way. But that sort of interface seems like complete garbage to me. It’s the sort of interface that you need more clicks and more time to achieve the same objective even though it might look flashy a first to some idiot. That’s NOT a better interface.
That is made with concept videos from xp, when it was in debelopment
Although the concept video looks kind of cool, I see many ways where it would get really annoying really fast. The video also makes it look more “Kid-based”, if you ask me.
forumula: Windows 8=Mac x Linux, or
Microsoft(Mac x Linux)=Windows 8.
It does not sound very well,,, eight… They should immediatly go to 9. It sounds way better,,, Windows NINE… Will it ever come? In the 41th century maybe. Windows 8? Let’s guess at 29th century. No, 2012, 2013… Just 2812. It would be cool i guess, if they release with the apocalyps day. (not saying its going to be there, im a agnost, but, if they just release it at that day.) Would be seemed like: Windows 8, apocalyps… epic…..!!!! (but still, Microsoft=fail.
the video stopped and started several times which also messed up the sound…windows 8 keeps closing for unknown reasons….it’s getting very frustrating.
okay this LOOKS really cool however how do we no if windows 8 is gonna be like this and IF it is then its a bit of a disappointment I mean face it its just windows 7 with a few new pictures.
okay this LOOKS really cool however how do we no if windows 8 is gonna be like this and IF it is then its a bit of a disappointment I mean face it its just windows 7 with a few new features
This is NOT what Windows 8 will look like; it’s a user created concept UI. MS are nowhere near implementing any major UI changes in regards to Windows 8 yet; the UI is usually the last bit to change in development anyway, as it’s been seen- early XP looked identical to 2k, early Vista/Longhorn looked like XP, and early 7 looked like Vista. I do like a few of the features in the concept, but as for genuine functionality- I’m not too sure…
As for what we can expect to see in W8; we’ll just have to wait.
the O/S is not bad as i c no difference from Windows 7 except the display and graphics. windows 7 is almost Vista ultimate but just a few changes. i feel its not far different 7.
Awesome, the vid makes running windows 7 look like old software.
DUde, it looks awesome. If the piles graphics could be spiffed up a bit and teh overall feel could be a bit more glossy without sacrificing performance (unlike vista) and larger icons, it could be a winner.
The video does look very convincing but didnt we see a video back before vista came out for code name “longohorn”?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9ifQvQCO7Y
I do like the interface though looks much more pleasing and simplified!! are there even 128 bit cpu’s out yet? seems like also Microsoft gets a lot of there ideas from videos like this lol
Hello. This is kind of an “unconventional” question , but have other visitors asked you how get the menu bar to look like you’ve got it? I also have a blog and am really looking to alter around the theme, however am scared to death to mess with it for fear of the search engines punishing me. I am very new to all of this …so i am just not positive exactly how to try to to it all yet. I’ll just keep working on it one day at a time Thanks for any help you can offer here.
