Windows 8 User-Designed Concept Video – Amazing or fail?

Dubbed the Copenhagen user experience, the following video is supposed to be a concept for a future generation of Windows – namely Windows 8. I was a bit surprised to see many Windows 7 concepts included so I contacted the creator, who confirmed that some concepts were adapted straight from Windows 7. The concept seems to be one year in the making.

Copenhagen shatters the composite prototypical event patterns people have developed for their OS, Windows.

Copenhagen is a User Experience concept that I designed. It is unique in the fact that it manages to bring together classic design, contemporary design, usability, and art.

There are also some similar Bumptop characteristics in the video. The scraps idea really caught my interest but the portable start menu and taskbar seemed too prone to accidental clicking.

Looks decent on video but will it work in practice? Let us know in the comments.

128bit sounds nice, but it looks like crap, certainly hope things improve, or I’ll be skipping windows 8, like I skipped vista

looks like a bomb, awesom man what a graphic work done in it . now thats what u call a super computer. bur the ques arrises will it work with dual core processor

    • pwned says:

      dont all recent computers?

    • nunyasochata says:

are you kidding? by the time the bugs are worked out in 2014 there will probably not even be quad cores available anymore and your HDD will be over 120 PB, and i will be using “Zesty Zephyr”… “im a PC, and i like Penguins” LOL!!!

  3. hmm :/ says:

    looks okay but abit weird:/

  4. Bashar says:

    Hi,
i think it is very nice,
and i hope that all the things in Windows will be improved .

  5. MattWeiler says:

    WOW, that look insane.
The final product will definitely be just amazing.
Now that MS released a solid OS win7, I have renewed faith in them (but not their Mobile OS team :P )

  6. haxerman says:

not too shabby, getting it tomorrow.

  7. jdc says:

cant possibly make this look any more like kde 4 could they? and whats with fast user switching now copying the cube from linux? just like they copied the linux wifi menu into windows 7, the kde slideshow background into windows 7, attempted to copy sudo into vista and failed horribly…. guess compiz and te rest of kde is next? and the dynamicly sized taskbar from xfce/gnome now going into windiows 8. think i’ll keep my status as FORMER microsoft user

    • someone says:

So you don’t like Windows because it lacks certain functionality. And then you don’t like Windows because it obtains that very functionality later but because it works/looks similar to how it does in Linux. I guess you just don’t WANT to like Windows, so you never will. There’s nothing Windows can do to make you happy. That’s too bad.

      • jdc says:

i do want to like windows. i loved using xp and still do for some stuff. i dont like bloat and i dont like how windows copies new crap into their os then calls it “theirs” like its a brand new innovation no one ever thought of….. in particular the wifi menu in win7 and the cheap/botched copy of sudo (aka UAC, confirm or deny) into vista

if i am going to PAY for software, it better be better than the legally free stuff, not the other way around. i would pay red hat without thinking twice if they started charging for fedora…. because fedora is very high quality

I certainly agree with jdc about how microsoft tends to copy things into their OS and say it was their Idea. But there are a few things that I like about this. First off, the now minimalist Task Bar (OSX anyone?), the breakoff taskbar and how it can be moved now anywhere and minimized (OSX/Win7), I really liked the new start button and task bar, that actually is something Ive been customizing my XP inststallation to do for awhile, the separation is great because alot of the time it just becomes a pain to have them there and not hidden until I really need it.

Now the new File organization method, Im not entirely sure where that came from, but I like it. If it makes finding my files faster and easier then great! Now, if there were a way to pin files and folders to the desktop without creating shortcuts (they get so annoying after some time)

  9. XcOM says:

I just want to know how he did that, is he really running that OS, or just a video?

If the former, i WANT IT NOW!

  10. Popov says:

    So stolen…

Half of the features are already in Mac OS X. The other half are from Linux.

I am wondering, when Microsoft will start to think in innovative way and stop look in other’s cups..

    Shame on them..

    • random dude says:

      Fuck Mac…Mac sucks dick

      • Popov says:

Says who? Someone brainless obviously.. :)

        • kruger81 says:

Brainless? using a mac makes a person feel brainless, such a dumbed down version of bsd. Here’s how it goes, linux for backround servers (ie. dns, apache, e-mail) windows for a great front end that is business friendly, and macs for braindead home users that love to click on every pop up they see and graphic designers who went to some trendy school for 25 grand a year and were taught that they could only work on macs.

I have worked on a lot of windows/linux servers and have had the unfortunate task of fixing macs for many years now…

      • hellheroes says:

Dude use it and you will be stuck to it… I have changed from xp to Snow Leopard and tried be4 both vista and seven… and I still hate microsoft… Cheers to the invention of the Ipod and Iphone

      • Blake8cake says:

I agree!!!! Mac is a time bomb, it just gets slower and slower then boom its dead!

        I HATE Apple!

  11. Yushatak says:

Are you guys retarded? Half of you responded as if Microsoft released this video – it was made by some random guy as a UI concept, and it isn’t a real OS – use your brains (if you have them).

    • Chris says:

thank you. i was reading through these, and i was like you people do realize microsoft didn’t make this right. so i thank you for not being a idiot

  12. Love it looks very nice and I can’t wait for it to come out! I like Windows 7 but this is even better then Windows 7! Hope to see more about it soon!

  13. tech guy says:

looks very nice but they have to improve it a bit and make it look way different from vista or 7 (they look almost alike) and they have to make something more revolutionary than the aero, also windows is too hard!why wont they make wobbly/soft windows like in beryl.they have to do all that because windows 8 may be the last os well ever use before earth turns to dust.

  15. Blake8cake says:

    I think it is awesome!!!

But i dont think i will get it because i just got windows 7 and it is good enough for me for a few years! I think it looks to complicated for normal home users but i would get it if i didn’t have windows 7!

  16. Lanun says:

    fail!!!

  17. Garth says:

That’s not how Windows 8 will look like, it’s not from Microsoft and it’s made up. They’ll never abandon the Explorer bar because of it’s ease of use. The bulls**t video is just plain dumb.

  18. X3None says:

Oh my god… Why don’t people understand that this is NOT the official Windows 8 UI. It’s logical due to the fact that first Microsoft publish the technical parameters and after that they show their first alpha UI. And they did say that they will be changing the whole style of the super-bar or possibly even bringing another concept.

  19. Grant says:

I could definitely see Microsoft incorporating some of the ideas shown in this video into Windows 8.

I like the Start Menu and System Tray; I’d get rid of the expanding titles on the middle part of the taskbar, though. Nice job to whoever made this.

  20. joecacca says:

this is a not even half impressive gui, that has more kde 3 in it then innovation. nothing else. show us something real, like boot it up in 2 seconds, or a task manager.. something that makes it unique…??

  21. JumpJet says:

Well, it’s totally weird. At first I thought it was like “Ubuntu+OSX+Steroids” but later realized that the ‘flashyness’ it showed, was terrible. Actually, I now hate the concept and I am looking forward for an actual concept from Microsoft.

P.S. I know this is not an official concept. But honestly, for me, it sucks!

    • Lusia says:

Well honestly, you said words from my heart. I mean, EXACTLY! Love at first sight. Hate at second.
      Love you JumpJet <3

      • JumpJet says:

Well, I am happy that you agree with me Lusia. Well, it was IMHO.
And do you guys agree with me? Yes/No?
        Feel free to comment!
And yea @Lusia…<3 you too! hehe…
        -JumpJet

    • Thomas says:

Some of the concept seems quite usable. But, some are total crap! Like *SH*T*…
Yup, JumpJet, I do agree with you :) :) :)

  22. Brandon says:

That is pretty awesome. Very intuitive in design. Not sure if and wehn we will see it but very neat stuff. Very much different from windows 7 but if the technology is being developed you know we will see it eventually in one form or another.

  23. Erik says:

    it looks kinda weird

  24. Stephani says:

    I like it but
I just wish you’d leave the taskbar the same as XP.

  25. dude says:

The Windows 8 video looks good. I’m not sure if I need all those features, or if most users will understand them. I’m curious to see the ‘Minimum System Requirements’ for that system. It’s gotta be Microsoft’s most bloated and hardware intensive OS ever. I bet it would gag a laptop with an AMD 2.0ghz processor and 2gb of RAM, I doubt it would even install an Atom N270 32 bit Netbook with Intel GMA 950 graphics and only 1gb of RAM, like the one I’m using right now.

  26. Necris says:

I just feel Wow, it is easy to the user Taskbar is not consuming workspace everything is at hand.
Start menu is not cluttered but divided to three convinient categories.

Cullen, you are a UI and UE genius.

  27. Ian Boen says:

I loved this concept! Thought the Mac style dock was cool – I could use the expanding titles right now. I really think Microsoft is heading in the right direction as far as looks and ease of use go.

I am a computer engineer and still use p3 800 Mhz with XP and still doing my job. it f*ckin unnecessary to upgrade to whatever bit or what ever processor.
